Look Inside a Discovery Box

Each month we send three fun and engaging craft activity kits related to a new nature-related theme and made from a wide variety of sustainable materials. Each Box also comes with free games, coloring sheets, and a Discover More booklet that includes extension activities using household items and reading suggestions related to that month’s theme.

Food Adventures

Craft 1: Fishing Game
Use the included template to cut fish out of recycled felt, then string up your pencil pole with string, a washer and velcro and go fishing!

Craft 2: Mosaic Tile Coaster
Look at all of the different colored tiles -- sort and count each color. Then, glue the tiles onto your recycled board to make a beautiful coaster. 

Craft 3: Grow Organic Basil

Using the included seeds, biodegradable cup and soil, plant your very own basil plant. Watch it grow, then taste it with different foods. 

Craft 4: Sprout Organic Alfalfa 
Use the included seeds, biodegradable cup and cheesecloth to sprout your own Alfalfa. Watch it grow, then taste it with different foods.

Craft 1: African Mask
Learn about the role of celebratory masks in Africa, and create your own using recycled cardboard, a stretchy cord, wooden clothespins, beads, pipe cleaners, eco beeswax crayons and non-toxic stickers.

Craft 2: Diwali Candles
Using paper pulp clay, tea light candles and foil glitter we'll make our own decorative candle holders as we learn about the "Festival of Lights." 

Craft 3: 
Japanese Paper Lanterns
Let's turn recycled origami paper, recycled ribbon and non-toxic stickers into a string of festive and colorful lanterns.

Craft 4: Origami Cat
Create your own Origami Cat using the included Origami paper and instructions.

Dinosaurs
Craft 1: Dinosaur Tail
Create a Dinosaur Tail for imaginative play using recycled felt, recycled ribbon, non-toxic stickers and a natural fiber ribbon made by artisans in remote villages. 

Craft 2: 3-D Prehistoric Puzzle Pet
Design a prehistoric pet with a 3-D wood puzzle, ink pad and recycled cork stamps then have a dinosaur dig! Taking turns with a friend, hide, find and assemble your dinosaur "bones!"

Craft 3: Dinosaur Fossil
Learn about fossils by making your own out of paper pulp clay, wood matchsticks and noodles.

Craft 4: Dino Sculpture
Create your own Dinosaur Sculpture using paper pulp clay and noodles.

Craft Kit #1: Wooden Birdhouse 
Decorate a snap-together wooden birdhouse with eco-paint, a wooden paintbrush and twine. Then hang and watch for new neighbors! 

Craft Kit #2: Spotting Scope
Learn about birdwatching by creating your own spotting scope from a recycled craft roll, recycled paper, recycled felt and recycled ribbon.

Craft Kit #3: Bird Puppets
Learn about endangered species while designing Mexican Spotted Owl and Whooping Crane puppets from recycled paper bags, recycled sticky felt and craft sticks.

Nature

Craft 1: Naturalist Kit
Explore the outdoors and collect specimens from nature to review under your magnifying glass and use to decorate a field bag and cover for a Nature Journal. Finish assembling the journal and then use it to record your thoughts about nature, tell a story or draw.

Craft 2: Pinecone Birdfeeder
Use peanut butter and birdseed to decorate your pinecone, then string it up near a window and watch for birds!

Craft 3: 
Sun Print
Pick out your favorite specimen from nature and create a special sun print using "magic" paper and a sunny window. Frame it and hang in your room!
