DIY Slime Recipe for Kids

Slime is all the rage right now and we decided to have fun with it by making slime monsters! Both kids and adults are making slime at home for play and to reduce feelings of stress and you can, too, with this fun twist on this popular learning activity. Let your pint-sized scientists’ imagination run wild with this fun sensory science project!

Ingredients

  • 4 oz bottle of white glue
  • 1 Tablespoon of borax
  • 2 colors of paint (we used powdered by you can also use liquid paint)
  • google eyes
  • pom-poms
  • 2 large cups for mixing
  • little cups with tops
  • craft sticks for mixing

How to Make Slime at Home

This recipe is for making 2 different colored monsters. Mixing the ingredients is messy but keep at it because the longer you squish them together the better the texture gets. The slime will be less sticky after about 5 minutes of folding it over in your hands repeatedly.

Step 1. Pour the borax in one of the large mixing cups and fill it with water. Mix well.

Step 2. In the other mixing cup, mix together half of the bottle of glue with one color of paint. Then add 5 spoonfuls of plain water and stir well.

Step 3. Slowly add 3-5 spoonfuls of the borax mixture to the glue mixture until slime begins to form.

Step 4. Your slime is ready! Pour into one of the containers and put the lid on. Then wash out the mixing cup and repeat the same process using the other paint color.

Step 6. To make your monsters, glue google eyes and pom poms to each container. An added bonus of this project is that your slime stays “fresh” and you can take it out to play on another day.

The Science of Slime

The mixture of glue with borax and water produces a putty-like material called a polymer. In simplest terms, a polymer is a long chain of molecules (like a piece of spaghetti). In your slime, the molecules stick together at a few places along the strand, which makes it behaves like a rubbery solid.
