Holiday Crafts: Upcycled Paper Roll Snowflakes

What do you do when the kids are in a creative mood during the holidays, but you don’t have a craft planned? You can make these great paper roll snowflakes out of toilet paper and paper towels rolls. If you have a craft box of goodies, you will probably have the other supplies on hand.

Supplies

  • One cardboard paper towel roll or two cardboard toilet paper rolls per snowflake
  • Thick craft glue
  • Glitter glue (Loose glitter will also work but of course it’s messier.)
  • Thread or yarn
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Wax paper

Directions

Measure your paper towel roll and make a mark with a pencil every ½”.

Cut through paper towel roll at the pencil marks.

Flatten your cardboard loops so they are pointed ovals instead of circles. Working on wax paper, lay out your ovals so that 8 of them meet in the middle, and glue them together. The wax paper will keep your snowflake from sticking to your work surface when the glue runs down.

Cut two of your ovals at the points, and then in half again so that you have 8 small ovals. Fold them in half, and glue them in the middle of your larger ovals.

Cut 4 of your ovals at the points, so that you have 8 medium size ovals. Glue them between your large ovals. Give the glue a little time to dry, then pick up your snowflake. If there are parts that aren’t glued well, add more glue to the back of it.

When the glue is dry and your snowflake is sturdy, decorate it with glitter glue or loose glitter. Add thread to it so that you can hang it on your Christmas tree or in a window.

Let kids use their creativity to come up with different paper roll snowflakes. You can spray paint them and add beads and rhinestones to them if you like. If you want to upcycle more household supplies, you can add bottle caps. It’s fun for kids to upcycle household materials to make craft projects, and these snowflakes will be pretty hanging on your tree, on a wreath, or in a garland.
