We’re donating 10% of weekend sales to Newtown (and some other ways you can help

We are all still reeling from yesterday’s news, and whatever stage you find yourself in — shock, grief, anger — eventually you’ll end up feeling helpless as you think of those poor families and their broken hearts.

It’s been especially hard for us to rationalize this while time continues to march on, and we find ourselves at our order cut off for Christmas delivery. It sounds so trivial to talk about such things right now, but it is what it is.

So while the wound is still so fresh, we wanted to do something, anything, to help as we know that we must push on with life and with business. We’ve decided to donate 10% of our sales this weekend to benefit the families of Newton, and specifically Newton Youth And Family Services, who is donating all of the money directly to those effected by the shooting.

And as parents, we also feel a little better knowing that we are providing a service and a gift solution that brings families together and helps them enjoy quality time. Because, as we are reminded again, time is the best gift of all.

While we hope that this does make this time a tiny bit more comfortable for those families, we also realize that it is a selfish move — it makes us feel a little less guilty going on with our lives while these people simply cannot.

If you are feeling the same, another great way to do something is to send a note of condolences, love and strength to Newtown. At the time of this writing, I would suggest sending the letters directly to the school:

Sandy Hook Elementary School
12 Dickenson Drive
Sandy Hook, CT 06482

This may be a good activity for older children who are struggling with the same feelings of confusion and helplessness.

Wishing everyone some peace today…
