Earth Day Slime

DIY Slime Recipe for Kids

Slime is getting really popular these days. Both kids and adults are making slime at home for play and to reduce feelings of stress. Because I know we can all be a little more stress free, and because diy slime is just so fun, I’m sharing a special earth themed slime recipe today!

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup White Glue
  • 1 Cup Liquid Starch
  • Orange Food Coloring
  • Teal Food Coloring

Orange and teal aren’t exactly the colors I had in mind when I decided to make earth themed slime with my kids. After a quick search of the grocery story I realized that food coloring is standard in only about eight colors. I would have to go to a store that sells a wide selection of cake decorating supplies to get earth tones. Our slime was a week-night activity and I decided orange and teal would be close enough to the earth’s colors for our purposes. My tween daughter made a little remark about the bright colors, but I think my younger kids liked the bright colors more!

How to Make Slime at Home

This is the easy part! Mixing the ingredients is messy but keep at it because the longer you squish the slime together the better the texture gets. The slime will be less sticky after about 5 minutes of folding it over in your hands repeatedly.

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of glue into one small bowl. Add 3-4 drops of teal food coloring. Stir until all the glue is an even color of teal.
  2. Pour 1/2 cup of glue into a second small bowl. Add 3-4 drops of orange food coloring. Stir until all the glue is an even color of orange.
  3. Stir in 1/2 cup of liquid starch into the first bowl of glue. Continue stirring until the slime becomes a glob around the spoon. Remove the spoon and use your hands to squish and fold the slime. Repeat the process with the second bowl of glue.

Once the diy slime is a good texture for stretching and playing, pull the orange slime lengthwise. Do the same with the teal slime and hold them both with one hand, letting them stretch lower, then fold the slime in half back over your hand letting them stretch again. The slime should now be stripes of orange and teal. Without mixing the colors too much, form a ball with the slime and put the ball on a plate. The slime will ooze out into what looks like the view of earth from space with orange being the land and teal being the water.

If you mix the colors together more they’ll eventually become an earthy green!
