International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. We’re taking a moment to celebrate our founder Penny Bauder today, and to bring light to what she’s doing to inspire the next generation of women leaders – in STEM, Education, and Sustainability!
About Penny
Penny founded Green Kid Crafts in 2010, with a passion to raise a generation of environmental leaders. A mom-founded & woman-led business, Green Kid Crafts creates opportunities for kids and families around the world to connect with convenient and sustainable STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) activities. Today, Green Kid Crafts has become a leader in the subscription-box industry, with over 1 million boxes shipped worldwide and Penny’s leading by example, and helping the next generation have more role models so they can dream bigger.
Achievements
Penny holds a B.A. in Environmental Management from Western Michigan University, an M.S. in Environmental Science from Alaska Pacific University, worked as a senior planner in Alaska Department of Natural Resources and director for Alaska Conservation Solutions.
Penny founded and grew Green Kid Crafts as a mom with little kids – each an achievement in their own right. Combined? Wow.
Penny’s commitment to sustainability can be found in every part of Green Kid Crafts – from its inception (why does crafting have to be so wasteful?) to production (100% recyclable packaging). Through partnerships with CarbonFund, OneTreePlanted, and 1% for the Planet she has built a values-driven green business and as CEO holds herself accountable.
Penny was the winner of Entrepreneur.com’s “Build Like a Woman” contest and continues to speak at events like San Diego Startup Week to teach others about sustainable business practices.
Dream Bigger!
In a recent interview with Lizet Esquivel from Welum, Penny was asked what advice she would give young girls who want to follow her footsteps.
“DREAM BIG! Girls can underestimate their own potential and fail to dream big enough. Everything starts with intention and in the wise words of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, ‘If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.'”
How do you help the next generation dream bigger? You help them visualize role models. Penny has been interviewing dozens of inspiring leaders in STEM, Education, and Sustainability to raise awareness, bring these role models to life, and share their stories to shift policy and make a lasting impact.
