We’re ready for spring here at Green Kid Crafts! Now is a great time to start thinking about your spring garden, what you’ll be planting, and learning about seeds. I’m sharing this fun seed sprouting activity that includes a printable bean house for your little sprout. The best part of this activity is that no matter what the weather looks like out your window, your little bean should grow happily indoors. Start a garden early and transfer to an indoor pot once sprouted. When the weather warms up you can transfer your little bean plant to your outdoor garden.
Seed Sprouting Activity
Seed sprouting might be one of the easiest science projects for kids and is a favorite of all ages. There are different ways to do this activity and ours will be in a plastic sandwich bag. The bag goes in the “window” of our printable house for kids to observe the growing process.
We sprout seeds in our homeschool science unit, and my kids have also done similar activities in their on-site classrooms. That means that not only is this activity fun for kids to do at home, it’s also a great way for a group of kids to start a class garden.
Supplies
- 1-2 Bean Seeds
- 1 Paper Towel
- 1 Ziploc Bag
- Tape
- Printable Bean House
Directions
- Moisten the paper towel so that it is wet but not dripping with water.
- Fold the paper towel in half, and then in half again.
- Place the paper towel in the bag, then place the seed in the bag between the wet paper towel and the plastic.
- Close the bag and tape it to the inside of the printed bean house.
Your bean should start sprouting in two or three days. If you notice any mold growth on the paper towel carefully change it out for a new towel. As your sprout gets larger you can transfer it to another container.
