Did you know there are thousands of underwater volcanoes underwater? Using a few items from around the house, you can create your own underwater volcano!
Ingredients:
- Room Temperature Water
- Hot water
- Popsicle stick/tree branch/stick of some type
- Small glass jar/container
- Large glass jar/container (Large enough for the smaller container to be placed into)
- Rubberband
- Food coloring
Directions:
Step 1: Use the rubber band to attach the popsicle stick to the smaller container.
Step 2: Fill the large glass jar/container with the room temperature water.
Step 3: Heat up another container of water until the water is very hot, almost boiling. Adult supervision required. Let it cool for about 3-4 minutes and then place the hot water into a large drinking glass.
Step 4: Place about 4-5 drops of food coloring into the very hot water.
Step 5: Dip the small container you just created into the very hot water and make sure the hot water fills the container all the way to the top.
Step 6: Next, carefully lower the small container into the larger room temperature container and watch the very hot water rise out of its container to the top of the room temperature water just like an underwater volcano.
The hot water rises to the surface because it is less dense than the room temperature water. This creates a neat volcano effect!
