As you have hopefully heard by now, Green Kid Crafts is one of ten finalists in Green America’s People and Planet Awards (please vote here!!). We’re giving ourselves a pretty big pat on the back for that acknowledgement, not just because of the high regard we have for the award organizers, judges and fellow competitors, but because it makes us feel like we’re on the right track.
When our founder, mom and environmental activist Penny Bauder, created Green Kid Crafts she set out to build a model of a sustainable business that would have a positive impact on the community. From our very mission of engaging kids with nature, to the way that we carry that love of nature into our product design, sourcing, and overall business and marketing practices, our goal is to help protect and preserve the environment and help support those who are making our world a better, safer place. Becoming a member of 1% for the Planet was a very logical next step for our company, and we are thrilled to announce that we have finalized that membership this month!
1% for the Planet is a growing global movement of over 1,350 member companies in 44 countries that donate one percent of their sales to environmental organizations worldwide. Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, the 1% community network has become a frontrunner in funding the work of environmental groups around the world.
Through our membership in 1% for the Planet, Green Kid Crafts has been able to formalize another aspect of our corporate giving program, while helping to grow the footprint and awareness of the 1% movement itself — which we see as equally important to the money we will contribute during the year. 1% for the Planet doesn’t only represent what its member companies are doing to help protect the planet — it represents and empowers positive consumerism. When you, as a consumer, favor brands and products that give back, you’re not only supporting a company that does good. You’re supporting all of its eco-minded suppliers, charity beneficiaries and other related organizations that do good too. The 1% for the Planet logo helps spur this cycle by giving all of us a simpler way to validate, signal and identify businesses that give back.
We are excited to join the amazing companies that make up the 1%FTP network, and to contribute financially to the great work that the environmental non-profits do on our behalf every day.
