DIY Easter Basket Craft for Kids

Easter is such a fun time for crafting with kids and making Easter egg baskets is always a favorite activity. This year we decided that instead of printing off a ‘traditional’ Easter basket template, we would make our own using old egg cartons. We always save our egg cartons, as they are a great recyclable material for craft activities, and they just happen to hold regular-sized Easter eggs perfectly!

This activity works for any age and can easily be modified to make it easier or more complex. I completed this one with my 3-year-old and we stuck with one color for the basket and simple decorations like stickers and pom-poms for decorations. For the older children, they could cut out pictures to glue on (supermarket catalogs are great for this) or use markers for decoration too.

What you need:

  • An old egg carton
  • Scissors
  • Paints – acrylic works best on the egg cartons. If you use poster paints, you will need several coats to get a dark color.
  • Pipe Cleaners/chenille stems
  • Shredded paper (you can make your own by shredding old paper of junk mail).
  • Pom poms
  • Craft glue
  • Craft chickens (optional – my kids love these things so they were a must have for us)
  • Easter stickers

What to do:

  1. Cut the top off your egg carton
  2. Paint the egg carton in your choice of color
  3. Allow the carton to dry for a few hours. Overnight is even better.
  4. Decorate! Let the children choose what they want to decorate the carton with. Let them be creative! We always have a box of Easter craft items and I let them go through and choose what they want. For the one we made we used pom poms and stickers.
  5. Fill the bottom of the egg carton with shredded paper.
  6. Glue the chickens on the top of the egg carton.
  7. Twist the pipe cleaners together (we used 6 altogether).
  8. Make a small hole in the sides of the egg carton
  9. Twist the pipe cleaners through the holes and shape them into a handle.
  10. Wait for the Easter Bunny to arrive!

I hope you enjoy making this DIY Easter basket. These are great for use in classrooms and child care centers as they are a low-cost activity, and you don’t need to use up your printing budget either! Have a great Easter!
