Sensory Play: Clay and Wood Block Structures
Do you have a young child who loves playing with blocks? Do you have a gazillion blocks just sitting around? The clay and wood block structures are the perfect activity to stretch out playtime a bit further. Whether you want a creative, engineering structural design activity or simply a new sensory activity, this is a great go-to for endless building!
Supplies
- Wood Blocks
- Air dry clay, moist
Instructions
Use small pieces of clay to stick blocks together.
Try and build a tall building, sticking the blocks together with clay. Be careful pressing down too hard on the blocks as they will crumble if too much pressure is exerted on them (and as my son learned over and over!)
Experiment away! Explore what works and what doesn’t.
Note: Blocks will only stick together if using moist clay. Set your blocks in a bin of water afterwards to remove the clay. Pick up your bits of dry clay, put in a Ziploc bag, and add a little water to re-hydrate for future play. Be careful rinsing hands in the sink, too much clay can clog!
As much fun as it was making our structures, it was just as much fun when they fell down. We bought colored clay to add that extra dimension of learning to the project. Art and engineering all in one!
