STEM Activity for Kids: Skewer Structures
Kids love building projects, whether it be with blocks at a young age or sticks. This activity combines skewers and clay to make structures! It provides endless engineering fun as kids explore shapes they can make.
Supplies
- 12” long bamboo skewers
- Modeling clay
Instructions
Break off chunks of clay and shape them into ½” to ¾” balls.
Build! Use the clay balls at the joints between the skewers. As the clay hardens, the structure will become more brittle.
We began with individual structures before my son decided to combine them to make a huge skewer structures! This is a great craft to put creative juices to work with hands. Kids will learn what structures work and those that don’t.

Every month a different box! For kids ages 2-10+
With 4-6 activities each, our Boxes pack a punch!
What’s different about Green Kid Crafts?
4-6 bite-sized learning activities in every box
Founded by a Scientist, each box has substance to it.
Mom-founded, mom-run, each box kitted by hand in the USA.
Green and rooted in sustainability, we plant a tree for each order.
Giving such projects to children will build their creativity, and they will be the engineers of the future. I try to make sure that my son is always busy doing something like this.
