STEAM Activity for Kids: Love Potion Lava Lamp
Did you grow up fascinated by lava lamps? Create your own love potion lava lamp using ingredients found around your home. This experiment may prove to be mesmerizing for your kids! The best part is that it can be repeated over and over, providing continuous entertainment for little ones!
Supplies
Tall glass mason jar
Vegetable oil
Water
Red food coloring
Valentine confetti/glitter
Antacid tablets (Alka-Seltzer, others will not work)
Instructions
Fill about 1/3 of your jar with water. Add vegetable oil, make sure to leave plenty of room at the top so the final mixture doesn’t bubble over.
Add a few drops of red food coloring. Add a tablet or two of antacid tablets and watch the red bubbles float to the top. The more tablets you add, the more fizzy it will get!
Add glitter or confetti along with another tablet or two. Now you can see the glitter or confetti float!
Indeed my children were fascinated so we added a few more tablets to enjoy the lava lamp show.
Oil and water don’t mix, so when the antacid tablets reach the water, they release carbon dioxide bubbles which rise up through the oil creating bubbles in the process. Pretty neat!
I hope you have enjoyed this love potion lava lamp science experiment! Feel free to use your child’s favorite colors for another day!
