Holiday Craft: Snowflake Crystal
Brrrr! Are you feeling colder as we head into winter? We’re staying warm indoors doing winter science at home. Today I’m sharing a cool crystal-growing project and guess what? The crystals are in the shape of snowflakes! You can hang these gorgeous snowflake crystals on your Christmas tree or at different lengths in a window. Not only are these crystals pretty, but they’re also easy to make with kids.
Supplies
- Blue or white pipe cleaners
- Cookie cutter in the shape of a snowflake
- Twine, string or ribbon
- Popsicle sticks
- Mason jars
- Borax
- Water
Directions
Make snowflake by wrapping pipe cleaner around a cookie cutter. Twist ends together.
Tie twine or string around the snowflake
Place each snowflake into a Mason jar and hang by a popsicle stick. Make sure it’s not touching the sides of the inside of the jar….you want it to be hanging freely.
Boil water and put 1/2 cup borax into 2 cups of boiling water. Stir until completely dissolved
Pour into Mason jars making sure to completely cover snowflake.
Let sit for a day and watch the crystals appear!!
Tip: Use wide-mouth Mason jars if possible otherwise it’s a little harder to get the snowflake out of the jar.
