Music Science for Kids: Musical Water Glasses
Take your kids into the scientific aspects of music with this fun learning activity. Not only will they learn how to make a water glass xylophone, but they will also see how making music with water glasses is a great way to integrate math and science lessons.
Supplies: 8 identical water glasses or mason jars; paper; plastic spoon; food coloring; marker
Step one: Fill each jar with the following measurements – 14/8, 12/8, 10/8, 8/8, 6/8, 4/8, 2/8, 0/8
Step two: Label the first (fullest) jar with a “1” and so on.
Step three: Add the food coloring to each jar to make the colors.
Step four: Line them up in numerical order and begin playing music! Which one makes the lowest sound? Highest sound? Once you are done experimenting, what about trying to play songs?? Beware, your older kids may get involved too!
